SPIRITUAL GROWTH

1. Core Meaning

Spiritual growth is the lifelong, Spirit‑empowered process by which believers are transformed into the likeness of Christ.

It is not self‑improvement or moral striving—it is grace shaping the whole person through Scripture, prayer, obedience, community, and the work of the Holy Spirit.

It includes:

• Increasing conformity to Christ’s character

• Deepening love for God and neighbour

• Growing maturity in faith, wisdom, and obedience

• Strengthening spiritual disciplines

• Producing the fruit of the Spirit

• Persevering through trials with hope

Spiritual growth is God’s work in us, to which we respond with faith and intentionality.

2. Biblical Foundations

2 Peter 3:18

“No one shall set out so inauspiciously as not daily to make some headway, though it be slight... let us not despair at the slightness of our success; for even though attainment may not correspond to desire, when today outstrips yesterday the effort is not lost.”

John Owen

“Be killing sin, or it will be killing you.”

Jonathan Edwards

“Gracious and holy affections have their exercise and fruit in Christian practice... True saints grow in grace.”
