REGENERATION

1. Core Meaning

Regeneration is the sovereign act of God by which He imparts spiritual life to a sinner, transforming the heart and enabling faith, repentance, and new obedience.

It is the miracle of being born again—a new creation brought to life by the Holy Spirit.

It includes:

• New spiritual birth

• A heart made alive to God

• Transformation of desires and affections

• The Spirit’s indwelling and renewing work

• The beginning of sanctification

• The foundation for faith and repentance

Regeneration is not moral improvement—it is resurrection.

2. Biblical Foundations

John 3:3–8

“You must be born again.” (Summary: Regeneration is a spiritual birth produced by the Spirit.)

Ezekiel 36:26–27

“I will give you a new heart… and put My Spirit within you.” (Summary: God replaces the heart of stone with a heart of flesh.)

Titus 3:5

“He saved us… by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.” (Summary: Regeneration is God’s saving, renewing work.)

2 Corinthians 5:17

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” (Summary: Regeneration produces a new identity and new life.)

3. Theological Meaning

A. Regeneration as God’s Sovereign Work

The new birth is initiated and accomplished by God alone.

B. Regeneration as New Spiritual Life

The spiritually dead are made alive to God.

C. Regeneration as the Root of Faith

Faith is the fruit of a renewed heart, not its cause.

D. Regeneration as Transformation of Desires

The Spirit changes what the believer loves, hates, and pursues.

E. Regeneration as the Beginning of Sanctification

New life leads to new obedience and growth in holiness.

4. Voices from Christian Tradition

“Give what You command, and command what You will.”

John Calvin

“Regeneration is the secret work of the Holy Spirit, by which the heart of man is renewed.”

Jonathan Edwards

“Grace gives a new spiritual sense, a new taste for divine things, in the heart.”

J.I. Packer

“Regeneration is the Holy Spirit’s work of renewing the heart, so that the sinner responds in faith to Christ.”

5. Practical Spiritual Significance
  1. Identity — Believers are new creations, not improved versions of the old self.

  2. Assurance — Salvation rests on God’s work, not human effort.

  3. Transformation — Regeneration produces real change in desires and behaviour.

  4. Holiness — New life leads to new obedience.

  5. Mission — Evangelism depends on the Spirit’s regenerating power.

6. Summary
