JUSTIFICATION

1. Core Meaning

Justification is God’s gracious and legal declaration that a sinner is righteous in His sight—solely on the basis of Christ’s righteousness, received through faith alone.

It is not a process of becoming righteous, but a once‑for‑all verdict grounded in Christ’s finished work.

It includes:

• The forgiveness of sins

• The removal of guilt and condemnation

• The crediting of Christ’s righteousness to the believer

• A new legal standing before God

• Acceptance into God’s family

Justification is God’s act, not ours—rooted entirely in grace, accomplished by Christ, and received by faith.

2. Biblical Foundations

Romans 3:24

“Justified by His grace as a gift…” (Summary: Justification is free and undeserved.)

Romans 5:1

“Since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God.” (Summary: Justification brings peace and reconciliation.)

Galatians 2:16

“A person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ.” (Summary: Justification is by faith alone, not works.)

2 Corinthians 5:21

“He made Him… to be sin… so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” (Summary: Christ’s righteousness is credited to believers.)

3. Theological Meaning

A. A Legal Declaration

Justification is God’s courtroom verdict: “Righteous,” not because of our works but Christ’s.

B. Based on Christ’s Righteousness

Christ’s perfect obedience and sacrificial death are credited to believers.

C. Received by Faith Alone

Faith is the instrument—not the cause—of justification.

D. Entirely by Grace

Justification is God’s unearned gift, not human achievement.

E. Once‑for‑All and Irreversible

God’s verdict stands forever; justified believers cannot be condemned.

4. Voices from Christian Tradition

“God crowns His own gifts in us.”

Martin Luther

“Justification is the article by which the Church stands or falls.”
