JEHOVAH / YAHWEH

Description
(The Covenant Name of God)
Yahweh (often rendered Jehovah) is the most sacred and significant name of God in the Old Testament.
It reveals God as the eternal, self-existent, covenant-keeping God who is personally involved with His people.
It is the name God uses when He binds Himself to Israel in love, promise, and faithfulness.
1. Biblical Foundation
A. The Name Revealed
The name YHWH (יהוה) appears over 6,800 times in the Hebrew Scriptures.
It is revealed explicitly in Exodus 3:14–15:
“I AM WHO I AM.” “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ … This is my name forever.”
This expresses that God:
• depends on no one
• has no beginning and no end
• is unchanging
• is the source of all existence
YHWH is thus “the One who Is, who Was, and who Will Be.”
B. Jewish Tradition
The name YHWH was considered so holy that Jews avoided pronouncing it.
Instead they said Adonai (“Lord”).
English Bibles reflect this by writing LORD (small capitals).
2. Yahweh vs. Jehovah — Why Two Forms?
Yahweh — the most accurate transliteration of YHWH.
Jehovah — a later hybrid form combining:
• consonants of YHWH
• vowels of Adonai
This produced YeHoVaH, which became Jehovah in English.
Yahweh is linguistically correct, but Jehovah is deeply rooted in Christian worship and hymnody.
3. Theological Meaning

God is the self‑existent One, having life in Himself and owing His existence to no one and nothing. - Tozer
B. The Covenant God

C. The Faithful God
“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.” (Deuteronomy 7:9)
D. The God Who Acts in History
