IMPUTED RIGHTEOUSNESS

1. Core Meaning

Imputed righteousness is the gracious act of God whereby the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ is credited to believers through faith.

It is not earned, achieved, or produced by human effort—it is given, counted, and applied to the sinner solely because of Christ’s obedience.

It includes:

• Christ’s perfect obedience credited to believers

• God declaring sinners righteous on the basis of Christ

• Justification by faith alone

• The believer’s new standing before God

• A righteousness outside of us but applied to us

Imputed righteousness means believers stand before God clothed in Christ’s perfection, not their own performance.

2. Biblical Foundations

2 Corinthians 5:21

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us…” (Summary: Christ takes our sin; we receive His righteousness.)

Romans 4:5–6

“God credits righteousness apart from works.” (Summary: Righteousness is counted, not earned.)

Philippians 3:9

“Not having a righteousness of my own… but that which comes through faith in Christ.” (Summary: True righteousness is received, not achieved.)

Romans 5:19

“By the obedience of the One, the many will be made righteous.” (Summary: Christ’s obedience is the basis of our righteousness.)

3. Theological Meaning

A. Righteousness Outside of Us

The believer’s righteousness is not inherent but credited from Christ.

B. The Great Exchange

Christ takes our sin; we receive His righteousness.

C. Justification by Faith Alone

Faith is the instrument—not the cause—of receiving righteousness.

D. Christ’s Active and Passive Obedience

His perfect life and sacrificial death together form the righteousness imputed to believers.

E. A New Legal Standing Before God

Imputed righteousness changes our status from guilty to justified.

4. Voices from Christian Tradition

Augustine

  2. Freedom — Believers are released from guilt and striving.

  3. Identity — God sees His people clothed in Christ’s perfection.
