ETERNAL LIFE

1. Definition

In Christian theology, eternal life refers not merely to endless existence, but to a qualitatively new kind of life that comes from knowing God, being united to Christ, and sharing in the divine life through the Holy Spirit.

It is both a present reality for believers and a future promise fulfilled fully in the age to come.

Eternal life is:

• Life that begins now, through relationship with Jesus

• Life that continues forever, beyond physical death

• Life that reflects God’s own nature—holy, joyful, and incorruptible

2. Biblical Foundation

A. Eternal Life as Relationship

Jesus defines eternal life not in terms of duration but knowledge of God:

John 17:3 (Summary: Eternal life is knowing the Father and Jesus Christ.)

This means eternal life is relational—participation in God’s love.

B. Eternal Life as a Gift

Eternal life is repeatedly described as a gift, not a human achievement:

Romans 6:23 (Summary: Sin leads to death, but God gives eternal life through Christ.)

C. Eternal Life as Present and Future

Present: John 5:24 (Summary: Whoever believes has eternal life now and will not be condemned.)

Future: Mark 10:30 (Summary: Eternal life is inherited fully in the age to come.)

Believers already possess eternal life spiritually and will fully inherit it in resurrection.

D. Eternal Life as Resurrection

Eternal life is completed through the resurrection of the body:

1 Corinthians 15:52 (Summary: The dead will be raised imperishable at the last trumpet.)

It is life in God’s renewed creation—heaven and earth joined.

3. Theological Meaning

A. Participation in God’s Life

Eternal life is sharing in God’s own eternal being:

• God is the source of life

• Christ is the way to life

• The Spirit is the power of life

This is sometimes called “the life of the age to come.”

B. Eternal Life as Transformation

It involves moral and spiritual renewal—being made holy, whole, and like Christ:

1 John 3:2 (Summary: When Christ appears, believers will be like Him.)

C. Eternal Life and God’s Kingdom

Eternal life is the fullness of life in God’s reign:

• No death

• No sorrow

• Perfect communion

• Joy unending

• Peace everlasting

It is the final victory over death and sin.

4. Influential Christian Voices on Eternal Life

St. Augustine

"Thou hast made us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee... [eternal life is] supreme fruition of God."

Thomas Aquinas

“Eternal life consists in the vision of God… the intellect united to its perfect object.”

"Eternal life is the full manifestation of that life which we now possess in Christ... perfect blessedness in His presence."

C.S. Lewis

"Eternal life means 'God's life in us'... not mere endlessness but quality of divine life shared."

John Wesley

“Eternal life begins at new birth and continues into everlasting glory.”
