COMMANDMENTS

1. Basic Meaning

In Scripture, commandments are God’s authoritative instructions for how His people are to live.

They express His character, His will, and His vision for human flourishing.

Commandments are not arbitrary rules—they are the way of life, the shape of love, and the boundaries of holiness.

2. Biblical Foundations

The Ten Commandments (The Decalogue)

Given to Moses on Mount Sinai (Exodus 20; Deuteronomy 5), these form the core of God’s covenant law.

Commandments 1–4: Loving God

  1. No other gods

  2. No idols

  3. Honor God’s name

  4. Keep the Sabbath

Commandments 5–10: Loving Neighbor

  1. Honor parents

  2. Do not murder

  3. Do not commit adultery

  4. Do not steal

  5. Do not lie

  6. Do not covet

Jesus interpreted these as the heart of God’s moral law.

3. Jesus and the Commandments

Jesus did not abolish the commandments; He fulfilled them (Matthew 5:17).

He summarized all commandments with two:

• “Love the Lord your God…”

• “Love your neighbour as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37–40)

He deepened them:

• Anger is the seed of murder

• Lust is the seed of adultery

• Love your enemies

• Let your yes be yes

• Forgiveness is essential

Jesus moves commandments from external behaviour to the orientation of the heart.

4. The Purpose of God’s Commandments

✔ Reveal God’s character

✔ Reveal human sinfulness

✔ Guide God’s people into life

✔ Lead us to Christ

✔ Form a holy people

5. Commandments in the New Covenant

Christians are not under the OT law as a legal system, but its moral essence is fulfilled in:

The Law of Christ (Galatians 6:2)

The New Commandment — “Love one another as I have loved you.”

The Spirit’s empowerment — obedience from love, not fear

6. Spiritual Interpretation

Commandments are not chains; they are paths into:

• Love

• Freedom

• Wisdom

• Holiness

• God’s good order

To obey is to reflect God’s nature.
