CHRISTMAS

Definition:

The Christian Meaning of “Christmas”

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Incarnation of God — the moment when the eternal Son entered human history as a baby in Bethlehem.

It marks the moment when “the Word became flesh” (John 1:14) and dwelt among us, bringing salvation, hope, and light into the world.

Christmas is both:

  • A historical event

  • A theological reality

It reveals God’s love, humility, and the fulfilment of His promises.

BIBLICAL FOUNDATION

A. The Incarnation

  • Luke 2:10–11 — “Good news of great joy… a Savior has been born.”

  • Matthew 1:23 — “Immanuel… God with us.”

Fulfilled prophecies:

  • Isaiah 7:14 — Virgin birth

  • Micah 5:2 — Birth in Bethlehem

B. God’s Love Made Tangible

  • John 1:14 — “The Word became flesh…”

God enters human experience, sharing our joys and sufferings.

Reflection

THEOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE

A. The Incarnation

Jesus is fully God and fully human — bridging the gap between God and humanity.

B. Fulfilment of God’s Promises

Christmas fulfils God’s covenant promises:

  • Salvation (Luke 2:11)

  • Hope for the oppressed (Luke 2:18–19)

  • Light in darkness (Isaiah 9:2; John 1:5)

C. God’s Humility and Servanthood

Jesus’ birth in a manger reveals divine humility.

D. Joy and Peace

Christmas proclaims:

  • Luke 2:14 — Peace on earth

  • God’s reconciliation with humanity

Reflection

The manger is the throne of humility, love, and peace.

LITURGICAL AND HISTORICAL OBSERVANCE
  • December 25 — Celebrated as Christ’s birth

  • Advent — Season of preparation and anticipation

  • Symbols — Nativity, star, angels, gifts, lights

  • Traditions — Worship, carols, charity, family celebration

Reflection

Christmas invites believers to remember, rejoice, and respond to God’s gift.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS FOR BELIEVERS
