CORNERSTONE

1. Basic Definition

A cornerstone is the first and most important stone placed when constructing a building.

In ancient architecture:

• It established the foundation

• Set the alignment for the entire structure

• Ensured stability and strength

In Christian imagery, the cornerstone symbolizes Christ, who is the foundational support, orientation, and unifying strength of God’s people.

2. Biblical Foundations

Old Testament

The cornerstone appears as a messianic image:

Isaiah 28:16   “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation.” (Summary: God promises a chosen, secure foundation for His people.)

This prophecy presents the cornerstone as God’s promised source of stability and salvation.

New Testament

Jesus and the apostles apply this imagery directly to Christ:

Ephesians 2:20   “Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.” (Summary: Christ is the foundational stone of God’s household.)

1 Peter 2:6–7 (Summary: Christ is the chosen cornerstone, though rejected by many.)

Acts 4:11 (Summary: Jesus is the rejected stone whom God made the cornerstone.)

In every passage, the cornerstone marks Christ as the foundation for God’s new people, the Church.

3. Meaning of the Imagery
  1. Foundational — Christ is the ground upon which Christian faith rests.

  2. Unifying — Christ joins Jews and Gentiles, heaven and earth, God and humanity.

  3. Stable and trustworthy — Believers lean on Christ, the immovable stone.

  4. Rejected yet chosen — The world rejected Him; God exalted Him.

  5. Orientation — Christ sets the direction for doctrine, ethics, and mission.

4. Voices From the Christian Tradition

St. Augustine

"The stone rejected by the builders has become the chief cornerstone; Christ crucified is foundation and capstone."

John Chrysostom

"As the cornerstone perfectly joins two walls, so Christ unites divided humanity in Himself."

Martin Luther

"Christ is the only foundation of the church; without Him all is vain."

John Calvin

“Christ alone is the foundation of the church.”

Charles Spurgeon

"Christ, the precious cornerstone, rejected by builders yet exalted by God."

N.T. Wright

"Jesus as rejected stone becomes cornerstone of God's new temple—His people in new creation."

5. The Cornerstone in Christian Life
  1. Identity — Christ gives believers a stable identity.

  2. Direction — He sets the path believers should walk.

  3. Security — Faith rests on something unshakable.

  4. Unity — Christ is the meeting point for all Christians.

  5. Growth — The Church grows from and in alignment with Christ.

6. Summary
