BLESSING

Definition:

The Christian Meaning of “Blessing”

In Christian theology, blessing is God’s gracious act of giving life, favour, strength, and goodness to His people.

It is not merely a pleasant feeling or a material benefit — it is the active flow of God’s goodness into a person’s life, producing:

  • spiritual flourishing

  • peace

  • divine empowerment

To be blessed is to have God’s presence, God’s favour, and God’s shaping influence at work within and around you.

BIBLICAL FOUNDATIONS

Old Testament

  • Barak (Hebrew):
To endue with power for success, prosperity, fertility, longevity
To kneel — blessing flows from God to humanity and from humanity to God in worship

New Testament

  • Eulogia (Greek):
    To speak well of
    To bestow grace
    To impart spiritual benefit

Blessing becomes explicitly Christ‑centred:

  • “He has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing.” — Ephesians 1:3

Reflection

All blessing has a Christ‑shaped centre

You can receive blessing by remaining rooted in Christ.

TYPES OF BLESSING IN CHRISTIAN THOUGHT

1. God’s Blessing Toward Us

  • Salvation

  • Grace

  • Provision

  • Protection

  • Peace (Shalom)

  • Identity as God’s children

2. Our Blessing of God

To “bless the Lord” is to:

  • Praise Him

  • Honour Him

  • Acknowledge His goodness

3. Blessing Other People

To bless others is to:

  • Speak life

  • Pray for them

  • Impart encouragement

  • Invite God’s favour upon them

Reflection

Blessing flows to us, through us, and back to God.

THE ESSENCE OF BLESSING

A. Blessing Is the Overflow of God’s Heart

  • God blesses because He is good.

  • Spurgeon: “The blessing of the Lord is His loving gift, not our deserved wage.”

B. Blessing Is the Opposite of Curse

  • Blessing brings life; curse brings diminishment.

  • Galatians 3:13–14: Christ removes the curse so blessing may flow.

C. Blessing Is Transformative, Not Just Material

  • Blessing forms character and deepens trust.

  • Bonhoeffer: “God’s blessing… changes us.”

Reflection

Blessing is not indulgence — it is formation.

INFLUENTIAL CHRISTIAN VOICES ON BLESSING

  • John Stott: The greatest blessing is knowing God.

  • A.W. Tozer: Blessing makes us holy, not merely happy.

  • Augustine: Blessings draw us into God’s love.

JESUS AND BLESSING

In the Beatitudes (Matthew 5), Jesus redefines blessing:

  • Spiritual, not merely material

  • Often found in suffering

  • Tied to character formation

  • Rooted in God’s presence

“Blessed are the poor in spirit… the meek… the merciful… the pure in heart… the peacemakers…”

Reflection

Blessing is God’s favour expressed in forming Christlike character.

BLESSING AND THE HOLY SPIRIT

Blessing is tied to the Spirit’s work:

  • Empowerment

  • Spiritual gifts

  • Guidance

  • Inner fruit

  • Revelation

  • Comfort

  • Transformation

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17

Reflection

Freedom is a blessing — the Spirit brings it.

BLESSING AS CALLING

Christians are blessed to be a blessing.

  • “I will bless you… and you will be a blessing.” — Genesis 12:2

We carry God’s goodness outward through:

  • Kindness

  • Generosity

  • Forgiveness

  • Gospel proclamation

  • Prayer

Reflection

Blessing is never meant to stop with you — it flows outward.
